Semaglutide

Semaglutide is used with diet and an exercise program to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication used mainly to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which help regulate blood glucose levels. Originally developed and sold under names such as Ozempic and Rybelsus, Semaglutide has also been studied for other medical uses, such as weight loss in people with obesity.

What are the effects of Semaglutide?

Semaglutide can have a range of effects on the body, some beneficial and others that may need medical attention:

  • Blood glucose control: Semaglutide helps lower blood glucose by increasing insulin secretion when sugar levels are high. It also reduces the release of glucagon, which lowers glucose production in the liver.
  • Weight loss: In clinical trials, Semaglutide has proven effective at helping people with type 2 diabetes lose weight, which has also led to its use in people with obesity who don't have diabetes.
  • Common side effects: Some of the most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. These effects are usually temporary and may decrease over time.
  • Serious side effects: Although rare, serious side effects can include pancreatitis, kidney problems and severe allergic reactions. Anyone using Semaglutide should be under a doctor's supervision.

What does Semaglutide help with?

Semaglutide is especially useful in managing type 2 diabetes and can offer the following benefits:

  • Better glucose control: By helping keep blood glucose more stable, Semaglutide can reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications such as heart disease, nerve damage and vision problems.
  • Weight loss: Besides its effect on blood glucose, Semaglutide helps patients lose weight, which helps both diabetes control and cardiovascular risk.
  • Lower cardiovascular risk: Some studies have shown that Semaglutide can help reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, in people with type 2 diabetes.
